Funded project – Sustainable Tyre Disposal: Developing a Circular Economy Model for Regional Victoria
Conducting research, design and trials to develop economically viable solutions for up to 28,000 tonnes of tyres reaching end-of-life in regional Victoria each year. The project aims to contribute to our circular economy by increasing tyre recycling and reducing stockpiling and landfilling.
Background
Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) is seeking to find solutions to the issue of end-of-life tyres (EOLTs) in regional and remote Victoria. The project will investigate and implement trials to reduce the regional and rural landfill or illegal dumping of EOLTs.
Through detailed stakeholder mapping, TSA will be engaging with regional operators and local governments to assess current capacities and collection options. A following feasibility study will test proposed solutions through a series of trials for inter modal transport options, and hub and spoke options.
The final result will be a report that outlines baseline data, stakeholder engagement, feasibility assessments, and audit and trial results.
Objectives
- Improve the understanding of end-of-life tyres (EOLTs) in regional Victoria.
- Develop circular economy solutions for EOLTs in regional Victoria.
- Reduce costs to sustainably manage EOLTs in regional Victoria.
- Understand the opportunities to leverage other product stewardship programs logistics.
- Increase recycling of tyres from regional Victoria by reducing landfilling and stock piling.
