Recycling Modernisation Fund Plastics Technology Stream

Through the Recycling Modernisation Fund (RMF) Plastics Technology stream, the Australian Government is investing $60 million nationally over 4 years to address critical gaps in Australia’s recycling infrastructure.

The stream supports advanced and innovative technologies targeting hard-to-recycle plastics which are plastics in waste streams where there are:

  • very low recovery and recycling rates due to difficulties in recycling
  • limited infrastructure and technology solutions to support circularity in the supply chain.

The Australian Government awarded a total of $15.6 million to 3 Victorian infrastructure projects where more than 43,000 tonnes of soft plastic products, like shopping bags, chip packets and pallet wrap, will be able to be remade into new plastic packaging. The projects will deliver 58 ongoing and 42 construction jobs and will help boost soft plastics recycling rates in Australia and reduce soft plastics in landfill.

These projects are funded by the Australian Government and delivered by Sustainability Victoria.

Announcement date: 26 August 2024

Naula Pty Ltd

Project: Feedstock Preparation Facility

Process up to 32,000 tonnes of soft and mixed soft plastic products each year, using advanced sorting and processing to refine them to produce new plastics such as food-grade packaging. This will help Australia to develop an advanced recycling supply chain that will turn post-consumer used soft plastic back into food and other packaging. The project will deliver 36 jobs.

Funding: $5,178,150

Pro-Pac Group Pty Ltd

Project: Circular economy: Transforming Australia's soft plastic landscape through sustainable packaging innovation

Expand the existing facility to turn recycled soft plastic feedstock back into soft plastic with recycled content. It will produce up to 11,000 tonnes of Australian soft plastic packaging each year, with 30% recycled content and create 12 jobs.

Funding: $6,003,333

Sustainable Plastic Solutions Pty Ltd

Project: Circular Agricultural Plastic Recycling and Remanufacture

The project will install recycling technology and infrastructure in Hamilton to recover and process an additional 8,000 tonnes each year of traditionally hard-to-recycle agricultural PP and LDPE plastics such as films, grain tarp and baling twine into high quality resins for remanufacturing back into the original products and create 10 jobs.

Funding: $4,421,704
