Litter and Illegal Dumping Grants – Funded projects

This grant program is a Victorian Government initiative aimed at funding projects to support land managers to address the issues of litter in coastal areas and waterways and the illegal dumping of waste.

These two areas were identified as priorities for action at workshops held in mid-2016 to discuss the top five litter issues in Victoria as identified in Victoria’s Litter Report Card.

The top five issues are:

1. Litter in coastal areas and waterways
2. Illegal dumping
3. Roadside litter
4. Cigarette butt litter
5. Plastic and microplastic litter (this issue was also identified as a priority and is addressed under a separate program).

The program offered grants of up to $10,000 for land managers to implement projects focused on preventing and managing:

• littering in retail areas affecting waterways
• illegal dumping in green spaces.

The program involved a competitive, merit-based application process and applicants had to match the funding on a 1:1 basis. Approved projects had to be completed within 12 months of the funding agreement being signed.

Fund recipients

Kingston City Council

The project incorporates infrastructure, enforcement, community engagement and education in order to reduce illegal dumping in Kingston’s green wedge. It will assess the effectiveness of five interventions to decrease illegal dumping of materials in and around the green wedge.

Funding: $9,850

Yarra City Council

To reduce littering behaviour in the retail area of Queens Parade, the project will engage with local businesses, residents and school communities on the impacts of litter.

Corangamite Shire Council

Trial of two compactable litter bins in Lismore.

Grant: $10,000

Greater Shepparton City Council

The project will involve purchasing, installing and monitoring cameras at green spaces that are identified illegal dumping hot spots by Council and Parks Victoria. The second element of the project includes complementary signage; trialling strategic communication styles across numerous locations to determine the most effective communication to influence behaviour in the project area.

Baw Baw Shire Council

To reduce the amount of illegal dumping from occurring in our green space hot spots by installing six poles with security cameras. The intervention aims to be a short and long term solution. The aim is to reduce the impacts of illegal dumping now and to deter people from doing it in the future.

Greater Shepparton City Council

The project will create educational material that will be installed on the public litter bins located in the CBD and the Victoria Park Lake. The signage will be designed to encourage users to 'bin' their waste. The imagery and wording will aim to inform and educate users of the numerous impacts litter has on the local waterways with a focus on local animals and drinking water.
