Australian Government Recycling Modernisation Fund

The Recycling Modernisation Fund is an Australian Government initiative that is investing over $190 million to expand Australia’s capacity to sort, process and remanufacture recycled materials such as plastic, paper, cardboard, tyres and glass. The fund helped Australia respond to the national regulation of waste exports.

An additional round of Regional and Remote funding under the Recycling Modernisation Fund was also made available to address waste infrastructure gaps in regional and remote areas of Australia. This funding increased the sorting, processing, and manufacturing or remanufacturing capacity of regional and remote locations.

Victorian funding

The Recycling Modernisation Fund was distributed by state and territory governments. Funding allocated to Victoria from the Recycling Modernisation Fund was be delivered via the Victorian Circular Economy Recycling Modernisation Fund.

This grant provided funding for infrastructure projects that address the specific national waste export bans for:

  • mixed plastics that are not of a single resin/polymer type and/or further sorting, cleaning and processing is required before use in re-manufacturing
  • single resin/polymer plastics that have not been re-processed (e.g. cleaned and baled PET bottles)
  • mixed and unsorted paper and cardboard
  • unprocessed glass, in a whole or broken state (both formed packaging and flat sheet glass)
  • all whole used tyres, including baled tyres, but not including bus, truck and aviation tyres exported for re-treading to a verified re-treading facility.

Successful applicants were required to co-contribute $1: $1: $1 ($1 from the applicant, $1 from Sustainability Victoria and $1 from the Commonwealth)

These projects were co-funded by the Victorian Government and the Australian Government.
