Small acts are all it takes to make a big impact

If you take used batteries to a drop-off point for recycling, you're giving them a new life and keeping harmful materials out of your bins and the environment. Valuable resources are recovered from recycled batteries and used to make new products like metal tools, computer parts or new batteries. This reduces the environmental impacts of using new or raw materials.

Never put batteries of any type in your recycling or general rubbish bins. This includes batteries in laptops, mobile phones, cameras, power tools, electronic toys and car batteries.

It’s a small act with a big impact on Victoria’s sustainable future.

Why it matters

Batteries placed in your household bins often cause fires, either in the bins themselves or in the trucks that collect them. They also contain toxic substances that are harmful to you, your family and the environment.

Tips and tricks

Find a drop-off point

Visit B-cycle or check with your local council to find your nearest battery recycling drop-off point.

How to safely store and drop off used batteries

  • Cover the terminals of used batteries with clear sticky tape or duct tape, to prevent sparking and reduce the risk of fire.
  • Store them in a glass container and make sure the container is not airtight.
  • Don’t keep batteries in a metal container or together with other metal objects.
  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place, away from heat sources.
  • Always keep batteries away from children and pets.

E-waste doesn’t belong in any bin

It’s not just batteries that can’t go in your household bins. In general, any item with a plug, battery or power cord that is no longer working is considered e-waste (electronic waste). E-waste is banned from landfill which means it can’t go in any household bin. Take e-waste to a drop-off point for recycling instead.
