Victorian waste education strategy
The Victorian Waste Education Strategy was released in 2016 as a key priority of delivering the Statewide Waste and Resource Recovery Infrastructure Plan (SWRRIP).
The Victorian Government has announced their circular economy policy, Recycling Victoria: a new economy.
This policy has reset the Victorian Government’s priorities and superseded our strategy for waste education over the next ten years.
Our priorities
We deliver and support best practice education programs so that Victorians:
- are well informed about waste
- take practical action to reduce waste and minimise environmental impact
- understand the importance of effective waste management and recovery of valuable resources.
The objectives set out in the original strategy will continue to guide our work under Recycling Victoria. Under both plans we will contribute to strengthening the recycling sector through building on our current programs and developing new initiatives.
Recycling Victoria
Recycling Victoria is the Victorian Government’s circular economy policy. It will guide us to deliver programs to:
- fundamentally transform our recycling sector
- reduce waste
- create thousands of jobs
- set Victoria up for a more sustainable future.
Recycling Victoria provides a coordinated approach to waste and resource recovery education.
Recycling Victoria’s waste education priorities are to educate the community on:
- avoiding and minimising waste
- supporting the community to recycle more and recycle correctly
- reusing, repairing and sharing products
- making more informed consumer decisions.
Our programs that will continue to support these priorities are:
- kerbside waste and recycling services
- social licence to operate training
- Waste education in Healthcare.
These priorities can be found under the Statewide Education Programs (2.3) in the Recycling Victoria policy.

Our guide provides an overview of our ongoing waste education priorities and direction under Recycling Victoria. Our waste education guide supports our strategic decisions and waste education program development.
This live plan will reflect the context of the day, whilst maintaining a long-term vision under the guidance of the strategy.
In 2019, the waste education strategy was independently reviewed to measure:
- progress to date
- prioritised activity
- emerging changes that would need to be considered in the future.
This review has informed the development of the guide and will continue to inform our decisions.
