Our impact in 2023-24

In 2023-2024, Sustainability Victoria continued to be at the forefront of Victoria’s transition to a circular economy and accelerating positive change and impact towards net zero emissions by 2045.

We enabled big system change to make the economy more circular

We have continued investing in recycling infrastructure so that Victoria can process more waste and make more recycled products and materials available for use again in real-world projects.

  • $9.5 million direct investment in recycling infrastructure.
  • $74.8 million leveraged private and Commonwealth investment.
  • 803,000 tonnes less waste to landfill.

We helped Victoria stop waste before it starts

Our Circular Economy Business Innovation Centre (CEBIC) is the go-to place for businesses to connect, collaborate and get support to trial new business models. And our behaviour change and education programs are enabling households to reduce waste and improve recycling habits.

  • 395,988t CO2e were saved by using recovered resources.
  • Over 6 million people reached by our education and behaviour change programs.

We leveraged community and industry action to reduce emissions

We partnered with government, local councils and industry partners to administer energy efficiency upgrades. And our 563 participating ResourceSmart Schools program avoided more than 8,554 tonnes of greenhouse gases.

  • 495 kW of solar PV systems installed in community projects.
  • Over 10 million kWh energy saved by our ResourceSmart Schools.
  • $407 million energy bill savings through support and advice to other agencies

We made it easier for Victorians to go circular

We supported communities to take charge of their own circular economy projects in their own way, with $10 million in grants to 126 circular economy projects led by councils and community organisations.

  • 156,831 Victorians/organisations engaged through training and events.
  • 75,014 hours volunteered by Victorians.
  • 11,781 Victorians safely disposed of their household chemicals.

Building the evidence base to support government policy and action

We act as the Victorian Government’s sustainability thinktank, and collaborate with researchers from universities, community groups and industry associations to solve complex challenges. We also track the attitudes, beliefs and behaviours of Victorians towards sustainability.

  • 70% of Victorians think that living sustainably is important.
  • 1 in 10 of Victorians rate climate change as the top priority for government.
  • 80% of home renovators / builders believe energy efficient homes will ease the cost-of-living pressures.
